Lena Dunham has been hospitalized after she suffered from an ovarian cyst rupture and is set to undergo surgery.

"Lena Dunham has been very public with her personal bouts with endometriosis. This morning, she suffered from an ovarian cyst rupture and has been taken to the hospital.

"Lena will be undergoing surgery at an undisclosed hospital. We thank you for your understanding and hope that Lena's privacy will be respected," Cindi Berger, Dunham's spokesperson, said in a statement.

The actress, who is the creator and star of the hit HBO series "Girls," was taken to the hospital on Saturday. She has been vocal about her ongoing health problems on social media.

Dunham wrote on her official Facebook page to inform the fans that she would be taking a break from the spotlight to get some rest because of her "chronic condition."

"I just wanted to let you know that, while I am so excited for Girls to return on Feb 21, I won't be out and about doing press for the new season. As many of you know I have endometriosis, a chronic condition that affects approximately 1 in 10 women's reproductive health," she wrote.

"I am currently going through a rough patch with the illness and my body (along with my amazing doctors) let me know, in no uncertain terms, that it's time to rest. That's a hard thing to do, but I'm trying, because all I want is to make season 6 of Girls the best one yet.

"I'm lucky enough to have support and backup from Jenni, Judd and the whole Girls gang. So many women with this disease literally don't have the option of time off and I won't take it for granted."

Dunham's HBO television series was renewed for a sixth and final season, and the fifth season is set to premiere on Feb. 21. The announcement of the show's renewal was announced on Jan. 6 by HBO programming president Michael Lombardo.

"Lena Dunham and her brilliant collaborators, including Judd Apatow and Jenni Konner, have given HBO a signature series of rare wit and intelligence," Lombardo said in a statement.

"They are exceptional talents, and I can't wait to see what Lena, Jenni and Judd have in store for the final seasons of this unique show, and look forward to working with them on future projects."
