College students are hitting the beach soon, as spring break begins in many states. Unlike other holidays, this is perhaps the most anticipated vacation because students don't have to fulfill family obligations, as with Thanksgiving or Christmas.

Spring break is the time experience fun, rest and relaxation among the company of friends - and only friends. It's the most liberating time to abandon tasks and responsibilities for a week of fun, and it's probably why kids travel to the beach for this.

However, you can spend spring break in other places besides the beach with these suggestions:

1) Las Vegas

Where else should you go if you're looking to party, but Vegas? In fact, it's one of the top 10 popular spring break destinations. With tons of restaurants, clubs, bars and casinos, there's plenty of opportunities to go crazy in the Sin City.

2) Portland

Not fond of the beaches? You might like the unique vibe in Portland, Ore. After all, the townsfolk are proud about keeping their city weird. There's plenty to experience in this city, from interesting foodie huts, parks and art centers to indie entertainment.

3) Phoenix

Enjoy a warm vacation without the beach atmosphere in Phoenix, Ariz., especially if you enjoy hiking or would like to try it for the first time. Phoenix has plenty of trails and mountains visited by spring breakers yearly.

4) Orlando

This city has Sea World, Disney World and Universal Studios, so you can have fun like a kid all over again. If you do choose to go to Disney, make sure to check their site first for ticket rates since the company introduced a new ticket policy.

5) Memphis

If you love a good barbecue, indulging in bourbon drinks and listening to blues music, or would like to experience this for once in your life, then head to Memphis, Tenn. for your spring break vacation. "Being in the south, you're going to have that warm weather when people are looking to get away," said Jonathan Lyons of the Memphis Convention & Visitors Bureau. "Another thing is we're very centrally located, so even for a family in Texas or Little Rock and Nashville, which are some of our feeder markets, we're really a quick drive away."

Before heading out to these destinations, ensure that your reservations and bookings are in order. If you're driving there, have provisions for gas and pack a road safety kit, too.
