The holidays are around the corner, and with them come the stuffing, honey-ham and mashed potatoes filled plates.

We've all been there.  The over indulgence in our favorite comfort foods has become an accepted part of the holiday season.

However, you can curb the unwanted pounds and still enjoy the food.  Remember, the holidays are supposed to be enjoyed, so don't let yourself become calorie conscious.  Here are 5 tips you can follow to keep yourself from overeating.

1.Don't skip breakfast

If you don't eat something in the morning, you'll be asking for trouble when dinner comes around.  Make yourself a bowl of oatmeal or some egg whites and whole grain toast with a side of bacon.

2. Snack between meals

People tend to overeat when they starve themselves, i.e. wait until they feel hunger to eat.  When your body is starving, you tend to fill your plate with more than you need.  You know the saying, "you eat with your eyes first?"  It is true, and you should be aware of the power your stomach has over your mind.

When going for the snacks, pick out something light, like fruit with some plain yogurt or a handful of peanuts.  It'll curb your hunger and by the time dinner comes around you won't feel your stomach turning from pain.

3.  Grab a plate and chew your food!

The bad thing about the holidays is there is finger food everywhere and your hand seems to wander into the chip bowls.  Instead of planting yourself in front of the delicious snacks, grab the smallest plate you can find or a napkin to place your food.  This way you can keep track of what you're eating and stop yourself from over indulging.

As for chewing your food, hear me out on this one.  Grab a fork and knife when eating leftovers or snacks.  Take the time to cut each piece and chew your food well before swallowing.  It takes your mind a bit longer than your stomach to register it's full.  Eat slowly and enjoy your meal.

4. Eat a slice of pie, not the whole thing

Exactly what it sounds like.  Cut yourself a small slice of dessert, enough to satisfy the craving.

5.  Socializes during holiday get-togethers

The holidays are about spending time with your loved ones, especially if you don't have the privilege to see them often.  Don't plop yourself in front of the football game with your chips and dip, tuning the world out as you watch your favorite team lose.  Talk to the people around you and make memories.  It's hard to eat when you're laughing and reminiscing with loved ones.

Weather permitting, suggest to your loved ones a group walk before dinner, a friendly game of catch or go for a jog in the morning if you can.  Turn up the music and get everyone dancing.  There are ways to stay active during holiday parties, so don't think you have to be a couch potato to fit in.
