The Washington Capitals announced that defenseman Mike Weber was acquired on Tuesday from the Buffalo Sabres.

Buffalo will receive a 2017 third-round pick in exchange for the 28-year-old, according to Sportsnet's Joe Pack.

The Washington Capitals were quick to make Weber feel at home.

"We are pleased to welcome Mike to our organization," Capitals vice president and general manager Brian MacLellan said. "Mike is a stay-at-home defenseman, who plays a physical game and is respected by his teammates. We felt it was important to add depth to our blueline by adding another quality veteran defenseman," according to TSN.

The Sabres are reportedly keeping 50 percent of Weber's remaining salary in the deal.

The Pittsburgh native has spent his entire eight-year career in Buffalo, the longest-tenured Sabres player before the deal, according to Pack.

"It's difficult to trade someone that has been a part of the organization for 10 years, but I think this is a good opportunity for the player and for our organization," Buffalo GM Tim Murray said in a statement, according to Puck Daddy's Josh Cooper.

Weber was drafted by Buffalo in the 2006 draft in the second round, 57th pick overall. This season, he has a plus-3 rating, with four assists and five points in 35 games. The 2010-11 season was his best, with four goals and 13 assists for 17 points in 58 games played and boasted a plus-13 rating.

Washington will most likely place Weber as a depth defenseman, alongside John Carlson, Matt Niskanen and Dmitry Orlov.
