Any Dallas Cowboys fan can tell you that backup quarterback is very high on owner and general manager Jerry Jones' list of priorities this offseason. Stalwart veteran Tony Romo appeared in only four games last season and the backup combination of Matt Cassel and Brandon Weeden managed to win just a single game. That kind of futility is why the Cowboys, preseason favorites to repeat as NFC East champions, sunk to the bottom of the division at 4-12. It's also why Dallas has been linked to Robert Griffin III in free agency.

Barring a miracle, the Washington Redskins will release RGIII this offseason. Yeah, yeah, we know all about his highly publicized on-field struggles over the last few years. But as far as backup QBs go, you'd be hard pressed to find one with more upside than Griffin. Throw in the rumor that Griffin wants to return to Texas and you have the makings of a suitable pair. However, all parties involved may not feel that way.

ESPN's Ed Werder is reporting that the Cowboys' coaching staff doesn't believe Griffin's, err, unique talents are a good fit for their offensive schemes.

"Not a lot of people in Dallas think he's a great fit in Jason Garrett's offense, and I'm told that Scott Linehan, the offensive coordinator, is really not a fan of RGIII's and doesn't think we would excel with what the Cowboys would ask him to do," Werder said today on "NFL Live."

Werder added that Johnny Manziel, whom Jones flirted with taking in the 2014 NFL draft, would have been a potential target had he been able to stay out of trouble. However, the recent domestic violence allegations against him soured whatever remaining interest Dallas may have had.

As of right now, Kellen Moore, who started the final two games of the 2015 season, is the top option to backup Tony Romo next year. However, it's likely that the Cowboys will add another passer whether through the draft (Carson Wentz?) or free agency.
