A new CDC report reveals that a third of Americans are simply not getting enough sleep, which can actually lead to many health conditions, according to NBC News.

The CDC has taken information from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System to inform its research into American sleeping patterns. Up to 83 million people are putting themselves at risk for high blood pressure, obesity and metabolic damage, according to UPI.

The research took about 444,306 people from all 50 U.S. states plus the District of Columbia and showed that Hawaii had the lowest amount of sleep and that Minnesota, South Dakota and Colorado had the most reported sleep, according to CNN.

However, there is hope, according to Dr. Wayne Giles, director of the CDC's Division of Population Health.

"Lifestyle changes such as going to bed at the same time each night; rising at the same time each morning; and turning off or removing televisions, computers, mobile devices from the bedroom, can help people get the healthy sleep they need," said Giles.

"The reason we are trying to draw attention to it is that first it affects such a large proportion of the population and second that it's tied to so many health conditions that are such a big issue."

The study is published online by the CDC.
