While nail trends are becoming predictable, menswear label Hood by Air (HBA) pulled a shocking look with a different type of nail polish style at the recent New York Fashion Week.

Models for the fashion brand sashayed the runway with a dark but faded nail polish that made the fingers look as if they were covered in a lot of dirt and grime, according to News Corp Australia. The style deviated from the usual beige, neutrals or nude shades and colorful rainbow palettes other designers presented. It was created by manicurist Dawn Sterling.

"We're doing a nasty nail - there's no other way to describe it," she told New York Magazine. "It's for the person draped in HBA, who is all about fashion, fishing, and gardening, but doesn't really give a f*** what anybody else thinks."

Sterling also shared that HBA founder Shayne Oliver wanted the model's nails to look this way, but creating the dirty look wasn't cheap. The manicurist used Chanel's Black Satin and Rouge Essentielle Le Vernis, and then she had to strip them down to make the fingers look dirty. Chanel's high end luxury nail polish costs $28 a bottle.

New York Magazine described the nail trend as "high-low anti-manicure," which will likely not be asked for at nail polish salons.
