Dozens of vehicles were involved in a pileup on I-78 in Pennsylvania Saturday that left three people dead and sent many to the hospital with varying degrees of injury, Fox News reportedAuthorities are blaming recent snow squalls for the accident.

"It was definitely a whiteout, I couldn't see any further than probably two city blocks. I saw brake lights and pulled off to the side. Somebody hit me when I was parked in the shoulder," said Raoul Jardine, a driver, according to CNN.

There were at least 60 vehicles involved in the pileup that left more than 70 people injured. The accidents spanned across three lanes of the interstate.

The accident occurred at 9:45 a.m. Saturday morning, shutting the interstate down in both directions. The interstate remained closed until midnight, The New York Times reported.

The crash occurred 75 miles northwest of Philadelphia, along the eastbound lanes of I-78.

Lebanon County police said that those involved in the crash, who weren't brought to the hospital, were sent to shelters operated by the American Red Cross to stay warm in the cold.

"We're keeping them warm, keeping them fed and hopefully going to provide them with some rental cars," Trooper Justin Summa said.
