Earlier this week it was reported MLB clubs such as Chicago Cubs, Los Angeles Dodgers, San Diego Padres and Atlanta Braves were hoping to sign 16-year-old Cuban prospect Lazaro Armenteros, who is also known as "Lazarito." It was believed the youngster's decision could come soon.

However, the latest rumors indicate that's not yet the case.

Jesse Sanchez of MLB.com is reporting that Lazarito's agent, Charles Hairston, says his client is not close to a decision as a few other MLB clubs, who prefer to sign him once the new international signing period begins on July 2, are now in the mix. However, Lazarito is still considering signing a contract during the current signing period, which ends on May 15.

"For a 16-year-old, it's easy to want to just play ball," Hairston told Sanchez. "But he wants to do what's best for his family. He's being very mature."

The Cubs and Dodgers are two teams that are vying for Lazarito during the current signing period because once July 2 hits, neither club will be able to sign an international free agent for more than $300,000. The Kansas City Royals and San Francisco Giants are in the same boat. All four MLB clubs significantly exceeded their international spending pools during the current signing period and are subject to penalties for the next two signing periods.

Lazarito is expected to command a signing bonus in the $15-$20 million range, according to recent rumors. Earlier this week Lazarito said was hoping to come to a decision on Wednesday, but the emergence of other MLB teams has perhaps changed his mind. Ben Badler of Baseball America recently reported that the Braves, Padres, Washington Nationals and St. Louis Cardinals are expected to make a big splash during the next signing period, so it's possible one of those clubs are now in greater pursuit of Lazarito.

Rumors from earlier this month suggested the Braves were "making a strong push" for the Cuban prospect.

The Cubs and Dodgers certainly provide enticing arguments for Lazarito to sign before July 2, but the Braves, Cardinals and Nationals are also attractive destinations.

Stay tuned for updates on Lazarito, who is already garnering significant attention like fellow Cuban prospect Yoan Moncada did last year.
