Google has finally unveiled its long-rumored Newsstand app for its users to discover news and magazines in an organized fashion on Android phones or tablets. The latest app is a fusion of Google Currents and Google Play Magazines apps.

Google is getting better at modifying its apps and services on its Android platform. The web giant upgraded its mobile OS platform with the latest version of Android 4.4 KitKat, in addition to bringing its latest smartphone Nexus 5 to the market. Besides making futuristic moves in an attempt to beat its rivals, Google is also bringing about certain changes to improve its apps in the Google Play Store. The latest move is a merger between Google Currents and Google Play Magazines, which is now represented by one app, Google Play Newsstand.

With the Newsstand app, Google brings all the latest news and magazines in one place for its users to access via Android smartphone or tablet. The app gives in-depth articles featuring audio and video and more from various genres such as business, cooking, entertainment, fashion, technology, science, travel and more. Users can also access more than 1,900 free and paid subscriptions within the app.

Newsstand app "puts the news you care about most front and center and presents stories that interest you based on your tastes." The description may sound similar to Google's former Reader app, but the app is not a Reader reincarnation.

The app allows users to read articles while offline, which minimizes data and battery usage. Going offline with the app does not disconnect you from the content on the page. You can also bookmark news articles if you wish to read them later.

The Google Play Newsstand app is free and available for download.
