Three-time Emmy Winner ("Monk," "Nurse Jackie") Tony Shalhoub has been cast in CBS's comic thriller "BrainDead" from "The Good Wife" creators Robert and Michelle King, TVLine reports.

Shalhoub will play Red Wheatus, described by the network as "a hard-drinking, fun-loving Republican senator who has spent decades in Washington making deals, until a radical transformation turns him into a health-conscious extremist who would rather destroy the government than compromise."

"BrainDead" is expected to debut in summer 2016, and it revolves around Laurel (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), a young Capitol Hill staffer who uncovers two dangerous truths at her first job in Washington, D.C.: The government has shut down, and alien creatures have arrived on Earth and eaten the brains of a handful of Congressmen and staffers...Yes, this is actually what the show is about.

Along with Winstead, "BrainDead" also stars Aaron Tveit ("Grease: Live") as Gareth, a legislative director to an important Republican senator; Danny Pino ("Law & Order: SVU") as Luke, Laurel's older brother and the Democratic whip; and Nikki M. James ("The Good Wife") as Rochelle, "a medical resident whose father dies as the result of a mysterious infection."
