Indianapolis Fire Department Station 22 received a surprise Jan. 29 when they found a box full of adorable puppies abandoned on its doorstep. The fire department cared for the squirmy pups until Indianapolis Animal Care and Control (IACC) was reached and summoned to the scene. The puppies were checked for any health problems and given a bill of good health.

The pups are now at the IACC, but are not old enough to be adopted yet. They're being cared for and given lots of love at the center, though, and will be ready to look for their forever homes in a few weeks, reported Fox 59.

The fire department was happy to help the puppies, but also want to be clear that this is not the appropriate way to deal with animals that you're unable to care for, said WishTV. "While this is a unique and specific incident that we certainly appreciate playing a part in, please do not drop animals off at IFD fire stations. We are not equipped for animal rescue. Take the animal directly to the IACC shelter (owner surrender program), Humane Society (by appointment only) or try to re-home them yourself," said the department, according to Fox 59.

"We don't have the equipment or the education to try to take care of animals, and we're not just talking about dogs, there could be cats, there could be all kinds of other animals that people are looking to find shelter for," explained Battalion Chief Rita Reith, according to WTHR.

The fire department also made sure to spread the word that the IACC shelter is having a Valentine's Day adoption special, and that going to a shelter to get a pet is saving a life.
