A cow escaped from a Halal slaughterhouse in Queens, N.Y. Thursday for 30 minutes before it was eventually captured by police.

The cow escaped from the Jamaica Archer Live Poultry and Meat Market into Jamaica, Queens, where it crossed the avenue and attracted passersby. It was cornered after some time into a parking area then safely taken by authorities into a trailer using a rope, according to ABC News.

Authorities from the NYPD 103rd Precinct posted on Twitter that none of the officers were hurt.

"Yes, you heard right! Cow on the loose-Jamaica Queens. All Officers safe. No injuries. Thank you all for your patience," their Twitter post said, according to the New York Post.

Mike Stura, a 49-year-old animal rights activist, knew of the incident and persuaded the owner of the slaughterhouse that he get the animal so he can place it in a sanctuary.

"I impressed upon him several times that 38 billion cattle go to the food industry," Stura said, according to the New York Daily News"It's nice if one lives once in a while."

The bovine was already in a deal for a family gathering and was about to be slaughtered on Friday, but after Stura slept outside the slaughterhouse all night, the owner eventually trusted Stura with the cow.

Stura, who owns the Skylands Animal Sanctuary And Rescue, gave the cow a permanent home.

Skylands Animal Sanctuary And Rescue is a "Rescuing, rehabilitating, advocating on behalf of, and providing lifelong homes for animals. Promoting a vegan way of living. Farm animal rescue," according to their Facebook Page. The cow is now named Freddie, after Queen's Freddie Mercury.
