An Oklahoma Senator's son died after the small plane he was flying crashed near Owasso this past weekend.

A source close to Sen. James Inhofe's family told local news station KOCO that his son, Dr. Perry Inhofe, was killed after the Mitsubishi MU-2B-25 twin turboprop went down five miles north of the Tulsa International Airport.

Earlier reports indicated that the small plane was registered to Sen. Inhofe's name.

Perry, who worked as an orthopedic surgeon in Tulsa, was reported to be the sole fatality from the crash. He was a licensed pilot and flying instructor, and owned two planes though a company called Anasazi Winds, LLC, according to the Atlantic. Sen. Inhofe reportedly taught Perry how to operate an aircraft more than 30 years ago. Perry then passed on the tradition, teaching his own son Cole how to fly. The Atlantic reported that all three next-of-kin were taught to fly on the same 1954 Grumman Tiger plane.

Perry's plane crashed after a 43-minute long flight from Salina, Kansas. Officials from the airport told KOCO that the pilot called for assistance at 3:45 p.m. on Sunday, saying that he was in need of help immediately.

The plane then spiraled toward the ground 15 minutes later, landing in a wooded area in Owasso, Okla.

The Inhofe family has not yet released a statement on the incident.

Dr. Perry Inhofe graduated from Duke University in 1984 with a degree in biomedical engineering and electrical engineering, according to KOCO.

After news broke that Perry had, indeed, died, some took to Twitter to express words of condolences.

"Please lift up Senator Inhofe and his family in your prayers," political advisor Amanda Carpenter posted.

"Oh God, this is so, so awful," Christopher Hayes wrote. "Condolences to Sen. Inhofe."
