Paul McCartney posted a heartwarming tribute on social media remembering David Bowie after the latter died on Sunday at the age of 69 following an 18-month battle with cancer.

"Very sad news to wake up to on this raining morning," McCartney captioned an Instagram picture of himself and Bowie taken by Linda McCartney in 1985.

"David was a great star and I treasure the moments we had together. His music played a very strong part in British musical history and I'm proud to think of the huge influence he has had on people all around the world," he added.

"I send my deepest sympathies to his family and will always remember the great laughs we had through the years," he continued. "His star will shine in the sky forever."

Although the two legends never had the chance to work together, they became friends through John Lennon, with whom Bowie collaborated on his 1975 album "Young Americans," according to Entertainment Weekly.

Several artists of the music industry, including Madonna, Kanye West and the Rolling Stones took to social media to pay tribute to the Bowie after reports of the legendary musician's death emerged. Click HERE to read more.
