A Russia man fought off an enraged bear by headbutting it.

Yusuf Alchagirov, 80, also kicked the bear, and even tried to stab it, RiaNovosti reported.

The menacing bear went up to Alchagirov, who works as a shepherd, in a raspberry field and knocked his knife away before he could use the weapon.

The man did not let his age stop him, and physically fought the bear. His kicking and headbutting antics knocked the bear off balance, which seemed to annoy it.

Fed up, the bear threw Alchagirov off a cliff and walked away as if nothing had happened.

"I got off easy. It'd have killed me if I'd chickened out," Alchagirov said on television, RiaNovosti reported.

Alchagirov had several bruises and a few broken ribs, the injuries caused him to spend a short time in the hospital.

On the bright side his family baked him a batch of traditional pies to celebrate his survival.

Bears are believed to only take on humans if they are provoked or starving, the Guardian reported.

Devastating flooding destroyed much of the North Caucus bears' usual hunting ground, causing them to approach villagers more often. This autumn a number of local residents have reported bear altercations.

Russia's Yakutia region has seen six reports of incidents involving bears. The hungry animals reportedly had been breaking into people's homes in search of an easy lunch or midnight snack.

Residents in the area got so tired of the rummaging bears that a program was put in place to shoot and kill some of the offending animals. In Alchagirov's case, the villagers do not plan to track down kill the bear because they believe it was only playing.

The type of bear that attacked Alchagirov is unknown, but brown bears are extremely common in the area.
