Early this morning it was reported that the Oakland Athletics and Chicago White Sox were having "serious trade discussions" regarding infielder Brett Lawrie. Rumors suggest the two sides are still working on a deal and are close to an agreement.

Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle was the first to report on the matter. She also reported last month that Lawrie or fellow infielder Danny Valencia could be traded in the near future shortly after the A's acquired Jed Lowrie from the Houston Astros.

Slusser said way earlier this morning that Athletics were "nearing a deal" in which they would receive two minor-leaguers for Lawrie. She recently tweeted the two sides are "not quite ready to pull the trigger" but they're still working on it.

Lawrie, who turns 26 next month, is entering his second year of arbitration eligibility and is expected to earn $3.9 million, according to MLBTradeRumors.com.

Lawrie batted .260/.299/.407 with 64 runs scored, 16 home runs and 60 RBI last season with Oakland after coming over in an offseason trade with the Toronto Blue Jays. On the other hand, Lowrie will be making $7.5 million in 2016, so the A's are looking to move some money and acquire young players in one transaction.

Last offseason the A's and White Sox made a big trade that sent Jeff Samardzija to Chicago in exchange for prospects as well as infielder Marcus Semien, who is currently Oakland's starting shortstop.

A deal could be in a place and agreed to at some point today. Stay tuned for updates.
