"Carol," the Todd Haynes-directed period love story, leads the New York Film Critics Circle Awards with most wins, including honors for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Cinematographer and Best Screenplay.

Haynes won the Best Director award for the film and Edward Lachman and Phyllis Nagy took home the Best Cinematographer and Best Screenplay awards, respectively.

"Carol," set in 1950s New York, follows the story of a married woman (Cate Blanchett) who falls in love with a department store clerk (Rooney Mara), according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Michael Keaton won the critics award for Best Actor for "Spotlight," while Saoirse Roman was singled out as Best Actress for her performance in "Brooklyn," according to The Wrap.

Kristen Stewart was given the Best Supporting Actress award for her performance in the drama "Clouds of Sils Maria," a role that made history as she became the first American actress to receive France's highest acting honor, the Cesar, for her performance. The Best Supporting Actor honor went to Mark Rylance for his much-lauded performance in Steven Spielberg's "Bridge of Spies."

Other winners include Pixar's "Inside Out," which bagged the award for Best Animated Film, and Frederick Wiseman's "In Jackson Heights" won the Best Non-Fiction Film category. The critics chose the "Mauritanian Timbuktu" as Best Foreign Language Film, and Laszlo Nemes's "Son of Saul" was voted Best First Film, according to Time.

Special awards were given to composer Ennio Morricone for his work in Quentin Tarantino's "The Hateful Eight," and William Becker and Janus Films received posthumous honors by the NYFCC, which comprises 30 film critics from New York-based publications.

The awards will be handed out on Jan. 4.
