Sometimes, you just need a little extra to get you by. It's no secret that the ratings for CBS' "Supergirl" are not where executives hoped they would be. It's also no secret that the DC TV universe has been remarkably successful with "Arrow," "The Flash" and a planned "Legends of Tomorrow" series in the works. While those three shows are intertwined, it has been said again and again that "Supergirl," "Gotham" and other DC-based series do not take place in the same universe.

Unless you need to borrow a superhero to help your ratings, that is.

Bleeding Cool is reporting that if CBS extends its order for "Supergirl," none other than Barry Allen will be showing up for an episode in May's sweeps week. Mind-boggling, I know.

CBS made an initial order for 13 episodes of "Supergirl" but holds an option for a "back nine" that would bring the season total up to 22. The decision to extend the series or not will likely be made during the show's upcoming mid-season hiatus.

Uber-producer Greg Berlanti, who is responsible for The CW's stable of successful DC series and for getting "Supergirl" off the ground, has said time and time again that there are no crossovers planned for the CBS series at this time. That thinking may be changing, though, given the lukewarm response to the Kryptonian and the fact that CBS owns half of The CW. While "The Flash's" ratings will never compete with a Big Four network, his fan base is steadfast and loyal and would likely provide a nice boost for "Supergirl."

Though this would present some tricky continuity issues, there's no denying that it would be one hell of a fun and entertaining ride.
