Some 601 babies in Japan were part of a record-beating event that took place at the Yokohama shopping mall outside of Tokyo. The baby crawling contest was chaotic, but the tots and their parents managed to beat the record previously held by China who only had 451 babies as participants, according to TIME.

The crawling competition was organized by publishing company Benesse and was participated by babies between six to 16 months. They were coached by their parents to crawl 9.8 feet (3 meters) and while some babies successfully achieved the task, others cried and refused to budge despite their parents wooing them with toys.

"About a month ago, she could not crawl well over a long distance, but I am so glad to see her grow," said mom Hitomi Nanba, according to Telegraph.

"I don't see my daughter crawling that often now that she's starting to walk a bit, so I came here to keep a memory of this step," said another mom Shoko Kittaka.

Officials from Guinness World Record were present and the agency's Japan Manager, Gulnav Ukassova, officially declared the new record, The Huffington Post reported.

The winner of the event took home a headset digital camera that allows parents to take photos of their child hands-free, according to Japan Times.
