Microsoft decided to suspend its Windows 8.1 update to fix some problems reported by users.

If you're thinking about updating your Windows RT tablet to the latest 8.1 update, you may have to postpone your plans for now as Microsoft has temporarily pulled out its Windows RT 8.1 update from the Windows official site. This is after users who tried to upgrade their device complained about boot configuration data errors resulting to the nightmarish appearance of blue screens of death (BSOD) during the startup process.

While the situation didn't look like it's widespread, Lance Ulanoff, editor in chief of Mashable, experienced the same problem while trying to install Windows RT 8.1 on his Surface RT. He took a screenshot of what happened and tweeted:"The Windows 8.1 RT update just cooked my original Surface RT #notgood #microsoft"

Soon enough, other users confirmed the same experience and replied through Twitter.

So far, the problem seemed to be confined to Windows RT devices. If you're one of those that have tried to download the Windows RT 8.1 update before it was removed by Microsoft and experiencing boot configuration BSOD, you can try to fix the issue by checking out the illustrated, step-by-step tutorial recommended by PC World "Kick that Computer." However, you would need to have a boot-ready USB recovery drive for your tablet or an access to another Windows RT device.

The team from the official support forum is working double time to resolve the problem as soon as possible. In its website, Microsoft expressed that it is investigating the situation that has affected some of its users who have tried to update their Windows RT device to Windows RT 8.1. The company has apologized for any inconvenience.

Interestingly, the Surface 2 tablets that are launching on Tuesday will have the pre-installed Windows RT 8.1 when shipped. Those who have already preordered are of course spared from worrying about upgrade woes.
