The latest episodes of hit TV shows "Scandal" and "The Good Wife" tackled the hot topics of abortion and Planned Parenthood.

Last Thursday, "Scandal" got very political with two shocking story lines, reported Variety.

"Scandal" stunned millions of fans with a one-minute, straightforward and sensitive scene of Olivia Pope (Kerry Washington) undergoing a legal abortion, noted the Atlantic. The is the first time since Roe v. Wade was passed 40 years ago, allowing women to have legal and safe abortions, that a major female TV character was shown on-screen undergoing the routine procedure.

The other scandalous story line featured former first lady and current senator Mellie Grant (Bellamy Young) who filibustered for 16 hours to protect women's reproductive rights, according to Slate. (A hot topic for the current presidential election candidates.) On "Scandal," Mellie threatened to shut down the government to prevent Planned Parenthood funding from being sidelined into the discretionary column, where it was a move away from being cut from the budget altogether.

Showrunner and writer Shonda Rhimes defended the veracity of the story line on Twitter.

Sunday night's episode of "The Good Wife" was pulled straight from the headlines as it featured a story arc about about an undercover video showing a doctor discussing harvesting fetal tissue from abortions and selling them for a price, according to Mashable. Ethan Carver (Peter Gallagher), Reese Dipple's lawyer, sought Diane Lockhart's (Christine Baranski) help to sue the organization.

The show began with a mature content warning, noted Fox News. The opening scene, in a frozen yogurt shop, showed an abortion doctor bragging about his medical skills: "We know where not to grab" to get the specimen. The fictitious group Citizens for Ethical Medicine videotaped Ethan's boss, Mr. Dipple (Wesley Taylor), who wanted to sue the abortion clinic and hoped Stacy Groom (Andrea Syglowski), who said the doctor tricked her into donating fetal tissue, would help them bring the suit to court.

The controversial episode took on First Amendment free speech laws as the law partner worked on behalf of an anti-choice client, according to TVLine.
