An Ohio family of six died after a police vehicle crashed into their car while rushing to a robbery scene.

The Upper Arlington police cruiser slammed into the family's Toyota Corolla at Riverside Drive and Fishinger Road in Columbus, according to local paper the Columbus Dispatch.

Perry Township police have identified the family members as driver and father Eid Badi Shahad, 39, his wife, Entisar W. Hameed, 31, daughters Shuaa Badi, 16, Amna, 14, Ekbal, 12 and 2-year-old Lina.

The Badi family arrived in Columbus from Iraq via Syria in 2010 - they resided in an apartment on the West Side of the city, and are survived by five sons who are aged between five and 18 years. Neighbors and friends told the Dispatch that the father as a FedEx employee.

The crash happened just after 1:30 a.m., as Officer Shawn Paynter was on his way to the site of a robbery in progress at a McDonald's on Henderson Road, according to Upper Arlington officer Heather Galli, who spoke with the Dispatch. Paynter was rushed to OhioHealth Riverside Methodist Hospital after he sustained non-life-threatening injuries to the head.

The family was headed west on Fishinger Road when the cruiser smashed into the car. The six were reportedly visiting the family of a friend on Henderson road Thursday night and were on their way back to the West when the fatal crash occurred.

Perry Township Police Lieutenant Steve Cesaro told Reuters that authorities are still unsure as to how quickly the cars were driving when the accident happened, and need to conduct further reviews to see which vehicle had the right of way. They do believe, however, that the officer had his lights and sirens on before the crash.

"We are investigating that, and it should take about a week or so before we will now," Cesaro reported to Reuters.
