The newspaper in Sen. Ted Cruz's hometown announced they regret their endorsement of the him during his 2012 run for U.S. Senate, USA TODAY reported.

In their editorial titled "Why we miss Kay Bailey Hutchinson," the Houston Chronicle reflects on the work of Sen. Hutchinson before she left Congress after 20 years and recalled her "reaching across the aisle when necessary."

"When we endorsed Ted Cruz in last November's general election, we did so with many reservations and at least one specific recommendation - that he follow Hutchison's example in his conduct as a senator," the editorial wrote. "Obviously, he has not done so. Cruz has been part of the problem in specific situations where Hutchison would have been part of the solution."

Cruz, 42, encouraged his fellow Republican lawmakers to resist voting to fund the government unless President Barack Obama defunds his own health care law. He has since received heavy backlash from both sides of the aisle for leading to a government shutdown.

The editorial board emphasized that Cruz is "sorely lacking" qualities of his predecessor, who successfully worked together with other members of Congress. They suggest that the new senator should take note especially as recent polls demonstrate most Americans blame the GOP for the shutdown crisis.

"We miss her extraordinary understanding of the importance of reaching across the aisle when necessary," the editorial said. "One reason we particularly believe that Hutchison would make a difference in these hectic days is that if she had kept her seat, Cruz would not be in the Senate."

In October, their editorial expressing support of Cruz demonstrates a very different perspective on the controversial Texan.

"We expect Cruz as the senator from the Lone Star State to spend his energies standing up for Texans of every background and economic station, representing their best interests from health care and education to energy, space and medicine," The Houston Chronicle wrote.

"Ted Cruz is thoughtful, energetic and dynamic. If elected, we urge him to use those qualities to further the interests of the state he is privileged to represent."

Clearly, Cruz did not meet their expectations.
