An 85-year-old Austrian grandmother reportedly cut up 950,000 Euros ($1.1 million) before she passed away in a retirement home in Vienna, Austria in an apparent attempt to spite her heirs, authorities said Thursday.

Prosecutors revealed after the woman died, the sizable sum, as well as her savings accounts books, were found shredded on her bed, according to The Rakyat Post.

State prosecutor Erich Habitzl confirmed the discovery, but initially said there was nothing he could do for the relatives.

""The damage of the money in the woman's property is not a criminal matter, so we have not begun any investigation," Habitzl told AFP.

Despite the elderly woman's attempts to disinherit her family, it appears her surviving family members will have the last laugh after Austria's central bank (OeNB) announced it would replace all the shredded money.

"If the heirs can only find shreds of money and if the origin of the money is assured, then of course it can all be replaced," said deputy head of the OeNB cashier division Friedrich Hammerschmidt, according to Opposing Views.

"If we didn't pay out the money then we would be punishing the wrong people," he concluded.
