Back in May we learned that Matthew McConaughey had read scripts for both Disney's Marvel and Warner Bros.' DC and that he was interested in eventually joining the comic book movie world. Well, today comes word that Marvel Studios had officially offered the lead villain role in "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" to McConaughey...who declined it, according to Variety.

However, we may be able to infer some details from this. Given that Marvel went after the high profile star, the role must be pretty important and perhaps not another one-off bad guy. You just don't target someone of McConaughey's caliber without a longer-term plan in mind. Could the villain role have also been Peter Quill's mysterious father touched upon in the first "Guardians of the Galaxy?"

Writer/director James Gunn has already made it known that Quill's father from the comics (Jason of Spartax) will not be the same character in the films. A popular fan theory suggests that Quill's father is comic book character Adam Warlock, whose cocoon was shown briefly during the post-credits scene in "Thor: The Dark World."

In twelve MCU films, only four of the six Infinity Stones (Power, Mind, Reality, Space) have been revealed. The remaining two (Soul, Time) will come in Phase III. Warlock is closely related to the Soul Gem in the comics - and plays a pivotal  role in the "Infinity Gauntlet" comic line -- and even becomes a villain for a time with the gem in his possession. This is just an educated guess as to what Marvel may have been offering McConaughey.

It will be interesting to see who the studio turns to now and what role he will eventually play in "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" and the MCU at large.

The follow up to the 2014 smash hit success is scheduled for a May 5, 2017 debut.
