Father Krzystof Charamsa, a high-ranking Polish priest who was recently fired after coming out as gay, has revealed a scathing letter sent to Pope Francis earlier this month about - what he calls - the hypocrisy of the Catholic Church. In his letter dated Oct. 3, Charamsa states that the Vatican's stance on homosexuality is unfounded due to the fact that the clergy is "full of homosexuals," reports The Daily Mail.

The 43-year-old priest further urged the Catholic Church to "be merciful" and to "let civil states make our lives more humane," referring to the members of the gay community in the Catholic Church. He also stated that with the church's current stance, it is making the lives of homosexuals in the faith a living "hell."

According to Charamsa, he chose to make the letter public as part of his efforts to push back against conservative church teachings, which he feels were highlighted in the conclusion of the recently-conducted synod on the modern Catholic family. The priest viewed the synod, which emphasized traditional marriage, as homophobic, reports The Blaze.

"The homophobic closure of the synod on gays resuscitated my passion for this battle to bring the church into the modern era. If the church can't make a serious, scientific reflection on homosexuality and include it in its teachings, even the Holy Father's openings and warm words on gays are empty," he said.

Prior to his removal from service, Charamsa was serving as a member of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, the Vatican body tasked with defending Catholic theology.
