Researchers investigating the surrounding waters of a Greek island were surprised to find an impressive number of sunken ships dating back thousands of years, according to Live Science.

The Greek island of Fourni had its share of local finds, with fishermen and locals discovering ancient pottery along the floor of the coast.

But archaeologists were nearly speechless upon their discovery.

Twenty-two shipwrecks, from as early as 2,500 years ago, were found by Peter Campbell and his research team, according to Ancient Origins.

"It's such a rare find. Experts are calling this one of the top archaeological discoveries of 2015," he said. "Surpassing all expectations, over only 13 days we added 12 percent to the total of known ancient shipwrecks in Greek territorial waters."

Though the ancient shipwrecks bring to mind life threatening battles on the open sea, the large amount of ships could simply reflect the amount of trading that took place on the coast.

The team surveyed for days, constantly being surprised by the sheer volume of shipwrecks that they found.

Campbell believes there is still even more to be found lying in the deep blue waters, and plans to return yet again next year to resume work, according to Discovery.
