Actor Nathan Darrow ("House of Cards") has been cast as Victor Fries/Mr. Freeze on FOX's "Gotham," TV Line reports.

According to them, his character will be introduced in a two-part storyline in episodes 12 and 13, scheduled to air in the fittingly chilly month of December.

Fries is described as "ferociously smart and eminently capable" by "Gotham" showrunner Bruno Heller.  He is said to be the city's top cryogenics engineers (how many of those do they have?) whose wife Nora is succumbing to a terminal illness. To save her, he attempts to find a way to freeze her body and preserve her life until he can find a cure. "This harrowing journey leads to his transformation into the legendary DC villain, Mr. Freeze."

This backstory is taken straight from the DC Comics, in which the villain has been terrorizing Gotham since 1959. Originally known as Mr. Zero, the character received a new name for the 1966 "Batman" television series, where he gained a loyal following of fans. "Batman: The Animated Series" from 1992 also helped to popularize his character and create empathy for his plight to save his dying wife.

"Gotham" can be seen Mondays at 8:00 PM ET on FOX.
