Apple is reportedly expected to hold an event on October 22 where the company will finally unveil the next generation of its iPad tablet device.

People familiar with the matter tell AllThingsD, the company will hold its next invitation-only event on Tuesday Oct. 22 and the focal point of the gathering will be to debut the latest updates to the company's iPad as well as to discuss the new Mac Pro and OS X Mavericks. The two other products were unveiled at the company's World Wide Developer's Conference back in June. It's possible the company will finally announced release dates for the new computer and operating system.

The fifth generation iPad is expected to feature a thinner, lighter design similar to the iPad mini design. Like the iPhone 5S the next iPad will run with the new 64-bit A7 chip.

The second-generation iPad mini is also expected to get an upgrade at the event with a new retina display. It's unclear if the iPad mini 2 will feature the A7 chip but it's likely.

No one is sure yet if the new iPads will feature the Touch ID fingerprint scanner found on the new iPhone 5S, though it has been rumored according to the report from AllThingsD.

Since the news shares of Apple are up more than $4, a 1 percent increase according to USA Today. Apple's stock has climbed in recent months but it is still far off from its Sept. 2012 high. Since that time the stock has taken a dip as investors wait for the company's next breakthrough device. So far other than updates to its existing products, the only real innovation from the company is rumored to be its upcoming iWatch project.

Apple remains the dominant force in the tablet mobile device industry however it has been seeing steadier competition from places like Amazon's Kindle Fire, which is expected to see its HDX update next month.
