CBS has kept her in the wings over the first month of the fall season, but “Supergirl” finally makes her premiere on Monday night and adds some much needed girl power to the male-dominated superhero genre on television.

Melissa Benoist takes to the skies as Kara Danvers (Zor-El) a.k.a. Supergirl who shares many of the same traits as her cousin, Superman. She landed on Earth at age 12 after the Man of Steel had already made a name for himself and was taken in by foster parents Drs. Jeremiah (Dean Cain) and Eliza Danvers (Helen Slater) and their daughter Alex (Chyler Leigh).

Kara kept her superhuman abilities a secret for 12 years, but at age 24, she’s finally embracing those powers. Those abilities will get her noticed by Hank Henshaw (David Harewood), the head of a super-secret agency where sister Alex works, who recruits Supergirl to protect the citizens of National City against sinister threats.

She has to do all this while balancing her day job as an assistant for media mogul Cat Grant (Calista Flockhart), the owner of CatCo Media. She gets an assist on the job and in her secret life as a superhero from friend and IT technician Winslow “Winn” Schott (Jeremy Jordan). Kara also falls head over heels for the new art director and award-winning photographer James “Jimmy” Winslow (Mehcad Brooks), who Cat has stolen away from The Daily Planet in Metropolis.

Learn more about who Kara will face as she transitions into a superhero and the chances of crossing paths with her fellow DC brethren, The Flash and Green Arrow.

Maxwell Lord

Peter Facinelli will recur as green tech billionaire Maxwell Lord who enjoys a friendly rivalry with Cat Grant and is fascinated by Supergirl. In the DC Comics, Lord see-saws between good and bad, helping to establish the Justice League, but also using his powers of influence to control the metahumans for his own personal gain.

Lucy Lane

The younger sister of Lois Lane from the Superman stories, Lucy (Jenna Dewan Tatum) comes to National City as a possible romantic foil to James and Kara. She’s “strong, smart and successful in her own right. She’s got a history with Jimmy Olsen and she’s come to town to right a previous wrong,” according to Entertainment Weekly.

Her romantic interests won’t spoil a potential friendship with Kara, though. “We’re not just bringing her in to purposefully create tension. She serves a larger story drive,” executive producer Ali Adler told EW. The character will be recurring and join the show several episodes into season one.

General Sam Lane

Lucy and Lois’ overprotective father Gen. Sam Lane (Glenn Morshower) also arrives in National City on a mission from the U.S. government. The powerful military lifer stirs up trouble for Supergirl when he enlists her in a dangerous government initiative, according to IGN.

Dr. T.O. Morrow a.k.a. Red Tornado

Fans will have to keep an eye out for how Supergirl presents Dr. T.O. Morrow, an evil scientist in the comics, and his android creation, Red Tornado, a hero and Justice League member.

Iddo Goldberg will play the role of Morrow who designs Red Tornado, the most advanced android the world has ever seen, for the U.S. Army as the ultimate superweapon, according to Comicbook.com. Red Tornado soon becomes sentient, posing a grave danger to National City -- including the people Supergirl cares about most.

Kryptonian Non

Chris Vance will play Supergirl’s greatest threat, Non, who is a former scientist in a league with the House of El, according to The Hollywood Reporter. He is a brutal Kryptonian military officer who is sinister, powerful and angry. He’s the antithesis of all things Supergirl.

The version of Non in “Supergirl” will be a “slightly different take on the character” compared to his previous portrayal on screen in “Superman II,” show producers told reporters at the Television Critics Association summer press tour.

Livewire

Another DC Comics villain, Brit Morgan will guest star as Leslie Willis a.k.a. Livewire in an upcoming episode, according to Variety. Leslie is a confident, abrasive and funny shock-jock who works for CatCo Media. When an accident makes her as dangerous and shocking as her words, Supergirl must stop her.

Reactron

Ben Krull a.k.a. Reactron (Chris Browning) is out for revenge in a potentially recurring role that will begin in episode three, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The deadly adversary of Superman from Metropolis wears an armored suit powered by nuclear energy. Never able to defeat his rival, Krull comes to National City to get revenge on the Man of Steel by killing his cousin, Supergirl.

Watch the "Supergirl" series premiere tonight at 8:30 p.m. on CBS. The show shifts to its regular time at 8 p.m. starting next Monday, Nov. 2.
