The number of guns owned by Americans has almost doubled in less than a decade, according to the Washington Post. In 1994, the average number of guns owned by a legal gun owning household was 4.2, but in 2013, that number almost doubled to an average of 8.2 guns.

The figures come from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives combined with surveys from the General Social Survey and Gallup.

The numbers also indicate that instead of more new gun owners, there are actually less, and that previous gun owners are simply buying more guns, according to the Independent.

A chart showing the rising trend of the number of guns in the household shows that the number was steadily rising, leveling off from 2000 to 2007, taking a brief dip in 2011 before rising up yet again.

Some are questioning the claims because of the sources used in the tally.

Gallup and the GSS for instance have varied numbers on household gun ownership, with Gallup figuring around 43 percent and the GSS reporting more than 10 percent lower in their estimate.

It's also worth mentioning that the GSS is considered by many to have a bias toward gun control groups, since their funding has come from anti-gun organizations, according to Breitbart.
