Earlier this year it was announced that Doctor Who star Matt Smith would be leaving the series after the upcoming Christmas Special and that actor Peter Capaldi would be replacing him as the 12 incarnation of the Doctor. Now it has been revealed that Smith's next project will be taking the lead in a musical version of American Psycho.

Based on the 1991 thriller novel by Bret Easton Ellis, the actor will play the serial killer Patrick Bateman in the upcoming production, which will run at Lond's Almeida Theatre from December 3 to January 25, 2014, according to IGN.

BBC News reports that the show almost completely sold out within hours of the announcement that Smith will be involved with the production. The musical was originally announced in January with Rupert Goold directing, Tony Award-winning composer Duncan Sheik of "Spring Awakening" and playwright Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa of "Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark" adapting the book.

Smith told the BBC he was "ectied" to be a part of the production.

"The opportunity to work with Rupert Goold, a director of great vision and flair, combined with the brilliant story and music, seemed like such a cool challenge," he said.

"Matt Smith is a wonderful stage performer and the perfect actor not only to lead our exceptional cast but also my first show as artistic director here at the Almeida," added Goold.

Smith has just recently finished filming his last scenes as the bow-tie clad 11th Doctor. After a 50th anniversary special starring him and David Tennant, Smith will be written out of the iconic role on Christmas.
