Amazon announced new job openings for over 70,000 full-time seasonal workers across its U.S. fulfillment centers to meet the increasing customer demand.

Amazon.com, world's largest online retailer, has announced that it will start hiring more than 70,000 seasonal workers across its U.S. fulfillment centers this holiday season. The hiring spree comes in the wake of increasing customer demand, which rose 40 percent.  Seasonal workers are eligible for health care benefits and earn 94 percent wages of a regular fulfillment center employee, Amazon.com said in a statement, Tuesday.

These seasonal workers have the chance of being turned into full-time employees after the holidays. Last year, the world's largest retailer converted "thousands" of seasonal workers into regular employees, and hopes to do the same this year.

"So far this year, we have converted more than 7,000 temporary employees in the U.S. into full-time, regular roles and we're looking forward to converting thousands more after this holiday season," Dave Clark, Amazon's vice president of worldwide operations and customer service, said in a press release. "Each year, seasonal jobs lead to thousands of long-term, full-time roles in our sites-jobs that offer great pay, benefits starting on day one and the chance for employees to further their education through our Career Choice program."

Amazon faces tough competition from rivals like EBay Inc. and Wal-Mart Stores and its investment in the warehouse production is to fulfill customers' increasing demands at the earliest time possible.

Amazon offers attractive programs for the growth of its employees such as Career Choice, where the company pays up to 95 percent tuition fees for different courses, regardless of their relevance to careers at Amazon. Since the program's launch in 2012, some employees are pursuing degrees in nursing and game designing.

Amazon.com isn't the only retailer to begin the hiring process this holiday season. Wal-Mart announced last week that it is hiring 55,000 seasonal workers in addition to 70,000 part-time and full-time workers, reports Bloomberg. It is highly essential that retail stores have their shelves stocked at all times, which is an added benefit for in-store retailers to attract customers.
