In South Carolina, a two-year-old boy shot his 40-year-old grandmother in the back while they were sitting in a relative's car, according to RawStory. Authorities say that the child was able to reach the .357 magnum revolver that was behind the passenger's seat, nestled in a pouch.

The toddler then shot his unidentified grandma in the back, prompting her sister to call the police, according to NBC News.

The gun was registered to the victim's sister, the young boy's aunt, and she says that she realizes what a grave mistake she made by leaving the gun in the car.

"My sister could've died," she said. "I wasn't thinking. For those of you with children, before you get into a car, ask if they have a gun. Make sure you are getting into a safe car."

South Carolina law dictates that a weapon in a vehicle should be "secured in a closed glove compartment, closed console, closed trunk, or in a closed container secured by an integral fastener and transported in the luggage compartment of the vehicle," according to New York Magazine.

Police Captain Mark Bollinger echoed the state law, saying that "the gun should have never been that accessible" and that police are investigating the incident.

"...There could even be some child safety laws in violation," he said. "Our detectives will be working with the solicitor's office to determine what, if any, charges will come of this."

The grandmother is expected to make a healthy recovery.
