Insurgents in Syria have fired two shells at a Russian embassy in the capital on Tuesday as hundreds of government enthusiasts congregated outside the complex to thank Moscow for its intrusion in the continuing conflict in the war-torn country.

There were no reports of casualties in the incident. Combatants from the opposition had pursued the embassy in the past, but whether or not the attack was aimed at the ongoing rally remains unclear, according to USA Today.

Activists had gathered outside the embassy with posters that contained images of Russian and Syrian presidents Vladimir Putin and Bashar Assad. They also waved the flags of the two countries.

Some of the posters that activists had brought outside the compound read, "Thanks Russia," and, "Syria and Russia are together to fight terrorism," according to the Associated Press.

Russia had started firing airstrikes at opposition supporters on Sept. 30. On Oct. 9, China sent warships to Syria to make a new alliance with Russia in order to put an end to ISIS, HNGN previously reported.
