The New England Patriots have reportedly signed running back Dion Lewis to a two-year contract extension through 2017, according to ESPN's Field Yates.

Lewis has exploded onto the scene this season for the New England Patriots. In three games, he has rushed for 146 yards with two touchdowns. Lewis is currently rushing 4.9 yards per every carry, and combining him with LeGarrette Blount gives the Patriots a solid backfield.

The Patriots have been famous for combining running backs with different skill sets, and last season, it was Shane Vereen and Stevan Ridley. Lewis and Blount are important pieces for the Patriots offense, and they provide them with two very different running styles that will keep defenses on their heels.

"I love the Warrick Dunn/Mike Alstott comparison," said Blount, via Bleacher Report. "Me and Dion kind of do our own thing, and we complement each other really well. He does his things really well, and I do my things really well, and that's the perfect combination. You can't beat it."

The Patriots might have to work out a deal with Blount if they want to keep this combination together, but for right now, they have at least secured Lewis. The Patriots travel to Arlington, Texas this week to face the Dallas Cowboys, and Lewis will look to find some holes against the Cowboys defense. The Cowboys have the ninth best rush defense in the league, but Lewis and Blount will likely put their defense to the test on Sunday.
