The blue light from cell phones and other devices has been found to disrupt the natural sleep patterns of people, but now, new apps have been developed to filter the harmful light, according to the Daily Mail.

It's hard to believe that your phone could actually be keeping you up when the light is seemingly harmless enough, but scientists claim that the light not only wrecks sleep patterns but harms your eyes as well.

The blue light wavelength is also produced by the sun during the day and helps us stay attentive during work or other daily activities, but that wavelength, when absorbed at night, manipulates the brain into believing that it's daytime, according to MakeUseOf.

The effects of the blue light are so powerful that "having a blue LED shining from a car dashboard would be an effective way of preventing drivers from falling asleep at the wheel," according to another study on the topic.

Most of the apps work by placing a red digital filter over everything on the phone's screen. Some apps can even complete the process right after sundown to ensure the brain-altering waves are not produced.

"Even if you're skeptical about it improving your sleep, you will immediately notice a reduction in eye strain when using your phone in a dimly lit room," writes reporter Andy Betts.

The blue light from phones may not only be keeping people up, but it may also lead to other health problems as well, like diabetes, cancer and lupus, according to Gigaom.
