Surely to be the surprise of liberals and conservatives alike, Texas Gov. Rick Perry's wife, Anita Perry, recently announced her views on abortion during an interview at the Texas Tribune Festival on Saturday, the Washington Post reports, the high-powered political wife calling the procedure "a woman's right."

While Anita may not necessarily agree with abortion, when asked by journalist Evan Smith if she supported her husband's strict new policies she said, "Well, that’s really difficult for me Evan, because I see it as a woman’s right. If they want to do that, that is their decision. They have to live with that decision," later adding: "Just like it’s a man’s right if he wants to have some kind of procedure. But I don't agree with it, and that's not my view."

The media has been speculating over whether or not Anita's comments were a slip-up, as her husband is one of the biggest anti-choice governors in the U.S., with his home state of Texas being "ground zero in the national reproductive rights debate," according to the Post,  now one of the 13 states in the country that bans abortion after 20 weeks.

Under Gov. Perry's new legislation, all abortions are required to take place in surgical centers, with doctors having admitting privileges to a local hospital, which means that most of Texas's 42 abortion clinics will be forced to close down by Sept. 2014, including a number of Planned Parenthood centers.

Anita Perry's recent comments have caused some to speculate over whether or not her statements were an accident. Jezebel's Doug Berry wrote that her comments suggest "indecision, hypocrisy, and illogic that so often echoes throughout the GOP's talking points," under the headline "Anita Perry Accidentally Says Abortion 'Could Be' a Woman's Right."
