A Marine enlisted at Camp Pendleton was found dead from a gunshot wound to the head at a marksmanship range inside the camp on Monday. The Marine belonged to the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force and was doing an exercise which involved live ammunition, according to the official at the Marine Corps base, the Los Angeles Times reported.

The Marine was identified on Tuesday as 19-year-old Lance Cpl. Dominic Schraft from Vienna, Mo.

The rifle range where Schraft was found is a venue for Marines to develop their "fundamental combat marksmanship" skills, according to 1st Marine Division public affairs officer 1st Lt. Colleen McFadden, according to NBC News. Investigators are still trying to figure out what really happened, and McFadden has not released any detail regarding the shooting incident at Camp Pendleton.

"The command's priorities are to take care of the Marine's family and friends," McFadden said in another statement, NBC added. "We want to ensure these personnel are being provided for during this challenging time."

Camp Pendleton is located in San Diego, Calif., and was established in 1942 to serve as training ground for US soldiers during the time of World War Two. Now it covers more than 125,000 acres of land where over 38,000 military families reside since it also provides housing for military dependents, according to Dailymail.
