Together with the Surface Pro 4 hybrid and the Lumia 950 and 950 XL flagship phones, Microsoft also unveiled the company's first ever laptop on Tuesday, called the Surface Book. Built from the ground up by Microsoft, the Surface Book seems to be the very definition of what a Windows laptop can be.

The Surface Book features a 13.5-inch display with a pixel density of 267 pixels per inch. The device is also encased in a machined magnesium body. The device's standout element is its unique, segmented hinge called the "dynamic fulcrum," which stabilizes the entire device when in laptop mode, according to PC World

Due to the unique hinge, the laptop can be folded backward, with the keyboard holding the device up. The screen can also be detached from the keyboard, making the Surface Book a hybrid device as well.

Microsoft states that the Surface Book is for users who want a bigger screen and "the perfect typing experience." The keyboard, which features deeper keys with 1.6mm of travel, is also fully backlit. Apart from the keyboard, which Microsoft calls the "perfect keyboard" for a Windows device, the Surface Book is also compatible with the Surface Pen stylus, for those instances when users would want to use the device's massive 13.5-inch screen as a "digital clipboard," reports The Verge.

The internals of the Surface Book are extremely high-end as well, utilizing Intel's latest Core i5 and i7 processors from the Skylake family. The device is also equipped with an Nvidia GeForce GPU with GDDR5 memory, making it quite adept at handling games.

The Surface Book's base model will feature 8GB of RAM, while the higher-end models will come with a hefty 16GB of RAM. Users will have a choice of opting for the 128GB, 256GB, 512GB or a full terabyte of SSD storage. Microsoft also states that the device is designed to have about 12 hours worth of battery life.

The Surface Book echoes much of what Google opted to do with the Chromebook Pixel - a device which serves as an example of what its ecosystem can achieve. Overall, Microsoft claims that "ounce-for-ounce, pound-for-pound, the Surface Book is the fastest 13-inch laptop ever made anywhere in the planet." The company even went as far as saying that the Surface Book is twice as fast as a Macbook Pro.

The Surface Book commands a premium price, however, with the base Core i5 model commanding USD 1,4999 and the high-end Core i7 model being priced at a hefty USD 2,699. The device is already available for pre-order, and Microsoft states that it will be available by Oct. 26.
