At least six people have been killed after powerful typhoon Mujigae made landfall in the Southern Chinese province of Guangdong on Sunday.

Mujigae, the 22nd typhoon of the year, has brought violent tornadoes to Guangdong, reported Xinhua. Nearly 223 people have been wounded by tornadoes induced by the typhoon.

Authorities said three people were killed and 134 others injured in the Fanyu district of the province, while three others were killed and 89 injured in Foshan City.

"The strong wind came from Foshan New City to the Furniture Expo Mall. In less than two minutes, it toppled trees and vehicles along the roads. At that time, the customers waiting to refuel their vehicles rushed into their cars. I was hiding behind a pillar. It is the first time I've seen such a strong wind," a worker at a gas station in provincial capital Guangzhou told CRI.

Nearly 200,000 people in southern China were evacuated before Mujigae landed in Guangdong, officials said, according to News Nation.

China's National Meteorological Center (NMC) on Monday issued an alert saying that heavy rain is expected to lash parts of Guangxi, Guangdong, Hunan and Guizhou on Monday and Tuesday.

"At 5am, Mujigae was in Nanning of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, packing winds of up to 20 metres per second. It is forecast to move northwest at a speed of up to 20 km per hour, with diminishing strength," NMC said, according to Bernama.
