People on an Oklahoma highway suddenly found themselves swarmed by hundreds of thousands of honeybees after a truck hauling the insects overturned, setting them loose.

The accident, first reported to authorities around 1 p.m. local time, occurred on southbound Interstate 35 in Garvin County, south of Oklahoma City, reported The Newswheel. Local news sources reported dozens of crates containing the bees being scattered along the nearby exit ramp.

Police responding to the scene were quickly overwhelmed, reported the Oklahoman. The bees, finally tasting freedom, swarmed police cruisers, nearly coating the entire vehicle. Remarkably, the deputy driving the vehicle, Carl Zink, suffered only one bee sting during the course of the incident.

Others in the area, however, weren't quite as lucky.

"I got stung on the lip, on the end of the nose, mouth, the side of the eye and then the back," said local Scott Woods, who pulled the truck driver from the wreckage. It was reported that the driver was taken to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Beeworkers worked until dark to capture as many of the bees as possible, reported Fox News. As night fell, the remaining crates were incinerated to prevent the vengeful insects from swarming people.

"There is a bee shortage," beekeeper Jim Stinson said. "[So] when they started talking about killing these bees here tonight, I threw a fit and said 'Don't do that till I get there.'"
