The Dallas Cowboys have traded for Buffalo Bills quarterback Matt Cassel, according to buffalobills.com. The Cowboys will reportedly get a 2017 seventh-round draft pick with Cassel, while giving up a 2017 fifth-round pick, according to NFL Media's Albert Breer.

The Cowboys have been in search of a quarterback since Tony Romo broke his collarbone Sunday against the Eagles. Romo has been placed on the injured reserved/designated to return list. The Cowboys reportedly had scheduled workouts with free agents Matt Flynn, Christian Ponder, Josh Johnson, and McLeod Bethel-Thompson this week.

What makes this move interesting is that the Cowboys reportedly just brought up Kellen Moore from the practice squad, according to NFL reporter Ian Rapoport.  The Cowboys are likely bringing in Cassel as a backup to Brandon Weeden, but if Weeden's play dips it wouldn't be surprising to see Cassel in there.

Weeden is in his fourth season in the league, but he has struggled to stay consistent since being drafted in the first round by Cleveland in 2012. Weeden played well after Romo was injured on Sunday, as he threw for 73 yards with a touchdown. Weeden likely has the job after last week's performance, but bringing in an 11-year veteran like Cassel seems like a smart insurance move.
