The Russian foreign ministry has called for "concrete action" on Monday after a mortar shell landed on its embassy compound in Damascus, Syria. Though no one was injured and the shell did not cause any damage, the incident nonetheless highlights the conflict that remains prevalent in the area.

The Russian foreign ministry believes that the attack was initiated by forces battling Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, which, according to the ministry, receives armaments and ammunition from "outside sponsors," reports The Times of Israel.

"A shell fell on the territory of the Russian embassy in Damascus on Sept. 20 around 9 a.m., going deep into the ground without causing damage," the Russian foreign ministry said in a statement.

"We condemn the criminal shelling of the Russian diplomatic presence in Damascus. We await a clear standpoint on this terrorist act from all members of the international community, including regional actors. What is needed is not just words, but concrete action," the ministry added, according to MSN News.

The Russian foreign ministry further stated that the attacks came for the direction of Jobar, a place commonly associated with the presence of anti-government militants.

Attacks in the Russian embassy in Syria have happened before, such as a similar incident in May, when one person was killed by mortar rounds that landed near the embassy. In April, the embassy was shelled by mortars as well, injuring three people.
