More than 500 homes have been destroyed in the Butte fires of Northern California, bringing the current estimated destruction toll to 1,000, with thousands of other buildings and homes still at risk of being caught in the blaze, according to the Chron.

According to Daniel Berlant, spokesperson with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, Saturday's fire in the foothills of the Sierra Nevadas added hundreds of additional homes to the destruction tally.

Firefighters have contained up to 65 percent of the blaze so far, according to NBC News.

Two deaths have been recorded due to negligence - Mark McCloud, 66, and Owen Goldsmith, 82 - who neglected the order of evacuation sent out by fire officials, according to the CS Monitor.

The extreme weather conditions over the weekend are expected to make eliminating the fires a dangerous and difficult task for California fire crews.

"We're looking at predicted weather of 100 degrees for the next couple of days, and at least mid-90s throughout the weekend," said battalion chief Scott Mclean. "You've got some high temps, high winds that could stir up those ash piles and those ember piles. We have to do that mop-up to be sure this fire goes to bed."
