Vallejo California police have apologized after calling a woman's alleged kidnapping a hoax comparable to the Hollywood film, "Gone Girl," but the woman and her boyfriend are now seeking "monetary damages" for the department's mistake, according to Fox News.

The suspect connected to the kidnapping, 38-year-old Matthew Muller, was recently apprehended by the FBI after reportedly committing an act similar to the film, as previously reported by HNGN.

His arrested prompted an apology in the form of two letters from Vallejo Police Chief Andrew Bidou, but the apologies seem to have not been enough, as Denise Huskins and boyfriend Aaron Quinn filed a legal claim against the city Thursday, according to the LA Times.

Quinn called the police one night and claimed that a robber drugged the couple and kidnapped his girlfriend, Huskins. He also claimed that a ransom was asked.

"The (Vallejo) police took the all too common approach of blaming the victims," said Jim Wagstaffe, representing the couple.

The attorney claims that the couple have had their reputations tarnished and lives "turned upside down" after the city police issued a press release calling their claims an "orchestrated event," according to NBC News.

Huskins was found two hours before the ransom was due in her hometown.

Muller has not yet entered a plea for his alleged role in Huskins' kidnapping case.
