A  66-year-old Japanese tourist died Thursday after slipping down the stairs at the Taj Mahal in India.

A witness said that the man had been with three friends when the incident occurred. He went to the top of the stairs near the Royal Gate and wound up falling while trying to take a selfie, according to BGR.

Upon falling down the stairs, the man, identified as H Ueda, sustained serious head injuries and fell unconscious, reported The Quint. He was rushed to a local hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

One of his companions also fell down the stairs and fractured his leg, local police reported.

The Japanese embassy was informed about the incident, and an investigation into the incident is underway, according to BBC News.

Selfies have been linked to several deaths in recent years, with Russia combating the outbreak by launching a campaign aimed at youth to encourage them to think twice before snapping selfies in risky situations.

A 21-year-old woman survived accidentally shooting herself in the head in May while posing for a selfie with a gun in Moscow. A man in Texas died earlier this month doing the same thing.
