Ridley Scott's "Blade Runner" is arguably the greatest sci-fi film of all-time but fans of the classic have been engaged in one heated debate ever since its release in 1982. Is Harrison Ford's Rick Deckard a real human being or is he actually a replicant? Those involved with the film's production have given different answers over the years, shrouding the question in ambiguity for more than 30 years. But "Blade Runner 2" director Denis Villeneuve ("Sicario," "Pirsoners") plans to unveil the truth in his upcoming sequel.

Speaking with Crave Online, the Canadian filmmaker did admit that he plans to address the question in "Blade Runner 2."

"The thing I must say is that I love mystery. I love shadows. I love doubts. I would just want to say to the fans that we will take care of that mystery. I will take care of it."

Villeneuve's quote does not explicitly say that we will get a yes or no answer, but it does sound as if it will at least be addressed. Whether or not that means a definitive answer is upon us remains to be seen.

Back in 2007, Scott himself told the New York Times that "Yes, he's a replicant. He was always a relpicant." However, Ford has publicly stated his belief that Rick Deckard is a human.

"Blade Runner 2" is currently in development although a release date has not been officially decided on at this point. It's been confirmed that Ford will reprise his role as Deckard (the actor appears to be on the Greatest Hits tour with Indiana Jones and Han Solo also getting reprisals in the last handful of years). Rumors have also suggested that Ryan Gosling ("Drive") may be joining the cast, though that has not yet been confirmed.
