A German alternative medicine conference ended in madness after 29 of its delegates took a hallucinogenic drug on Friday, according to The Independent. The delegates consisted of both men and women and were described as speaking nonsense and staggering as they walked.

The homeopathic group, who are referred to in Germany as "Heilpraktikers," was discovered at a hotel in the town of Handeloh, south of Hamburg where they were holding a conference.

Blood tests revealed the presence of the hallucinogenic drug 2C-E, which has been illegal in Germany since the end of 2014. The drug 2C-E is a member of the phenethylamine family along with MDMA and mescaline and has subjective effects that are comparable to LSD.

The fact that the conference was focused on homeopathy has raised questions as to whether the delegates took the drug intentionally, according to Inverse.

"It must have been a multiple overdose. That does not support the view that the people concerned took the hallucinogen knowingly," said Torsten Passie, a member of the German government's expert commission for narcotics. "One has to assume that people were not told about the substance, its effects and risks before taking it."

Over 150 medical and police staff were send to the hotel, where delegates were said to have been suffered from cramps, delusions and breathing problems, according to Medical Daily.

Participants were unfit to answer police questions until Monday, although no information from the interviews has yet to be made public.
